KIT # 134: The Power Of Focus
Issue:   #134    Date: June 1st, 2004

Publisher's Corner

Hi and welcome to all my readers - it's great having you with us. Please feel free to comment on any issues brought forth in KIT and the Home 4 Success channel. It's here for you.

On Friday I was kind of halfway paying attention to Dr. Phil as I was working. For those of you who don't know, it's a television talk show hosted by Dr. Phil McGraw. His guests were young college graduates. I found it very surprising to hear the unrealistic expectations these kids had for job prospects after graduation.

Most expected to be earning six figure incomes on graduation and many were surprised they hadn't found an 'awesome job' - their words - in their fields. It just seemed that these young adults were setting their expectations so high upon graduation that they couldn't help but be let down.

It just isn't realistic. The reality is that you will have to work your way through the ranks - you don't just start in the top of your chosen profession. From the comments made by these young people, they didn't seem to think that applied to them simply because they graduated from college. Telling our young people they can be and do anything they choose to do is fine - they should also understand it will require hard work to get there. College is just the beginning.

The Power of Focus is today's Feature Article. In the article John Assaraf explains the importance of focus and how you can get as much as possible out of your day by staying focused on the important things that will move your business forward.

We all have days where we feel like what we're doing just isn't worth it and feel like quitting. Today's Special Feature, The Top Ten Strategies to Employ When You Feel Like Quitting, is brought to us by business and professional coach, Monty Sharp.

And be sure to check out today's In The Spotlight. I made you this offer back in February and James has been the first one to take me up on it. In The Spotlight gives you a chance to reach out and share a bit about yourselves and why you chose to do business on the internet. The details for sending your information can be found here.

Have a great day and keep smiling.

The Power of Focus
by John Assaraf

The Street Kid - John Assaraf

Many years ago, I coined the terms "Bull's-eye Thinking" and "Bull's-eye Action" as a way to get the businesses and individuals I was consulting with, to focus only on the most important activities every day, instead of the stuff that shows up on a daily basis.

Some of them were forever doing the least useful stuff in their business and then complaining that they weren't getting the results they wanted.

It seemed that everything other than the highest priorities always had a way of distracting them.

Their mindset was, "I'll just get this out of the way and then I'll focus on the big and important things".

It never happens. The "stuff" always comes up.

I used to teach a business-planning seminar to real estate agents, and one of the requirements of the participants was they had to bring a spreadsheet of their activities for the prior 2 weeks.

Here's what we discovered based on a 50 hour workweek:

  • The agents who spent 10 hours a week with a potential customer who would list or buy a home earned an average of $35 -50k a year.
  • The agents who spent 20 hours a week with a potential client earned an average of $75k a year.
  • The agents who spent 30 hours a week with a potential client earned over $250k a year.

And, get this ...

  • The agents who spent over 40 hours a week in front of prospects averaged over $500k year!

So what's the point, you may be asking?

The point is this ...

Look at your career or business, and you ask yourself these questions ...

How many hours a day/week am I actually doing what I am best at? Or how many hours a day/week am I doing the activity that brings in the highest return on my time? How many hours a week am I getting caught up in "stuff"?

Most people get caught up in the "stuff" because they haven't taken the time to really think through and plan what they should be focused on, or to really understand where they make the most return on investment of time.

If you have the capacity to earn $50, $100 or even $1,000 per hour, you should NEVER be doing any activity that pays you less unless you really want to.

Successful people do the highest paid activities first and then the "stuff". Or better yet, they hire someone else to do all the "stuff" that keeps them away from earning the highest income per hour.

Stop letting the phone interrupt you. It's for your convenience, not others.

Stop letting other people's agenda interrupt you. Stop doing "stuff" and start doing only the real things that get real results.

Plan your ideal day with the outcome you want and focus only on that, and don't deviate until what you want to accomplish is done.

Leave 20% of your day as buffer time for stuff that actually must be, and can only be, taken care of by you.

There's a story about Frank Sinatra that is worthy of repeating. As it goes, one day while he was rehearsing one of the crew who sets up the stage asked him to help move the piano. Frank just looked the guy and said "I don't get paid to move piano's!"

He clearly understood what he should do and what he shouldn't.

I have gotten myself into a habit of planning the outcome of my day first thing and setting 3 - 4 major outcomes that I focus on each day. Any deviation from that outcome must be caused by "my emergency", not someone else's.

So with that said, do one thing right now without interruptions that will earn you, your highest income this hour.

Then get in the habit of doing the things that consistently keep you at that level. The real key is to laser focus on the big stuff that drives revenue.

The Top Ten Strategies to Employ When You Feel Like Quitting
By Monty J. Sharp, CCC, CWTC, CPBA

Monty Sharp

Ever feel like quitting? “Are you kidding?” you ask, “A better question would be, ‘How many times TODAY have I felt like quitting?' “ Sure. We've all felt like “throwing in the towel” at one time or another. If you haven't, I suggest that you check your pulse quickly. And here's a real shocker for you: the notion that “winners never quit” is a crock! Everyone – even “winners”- has not only felt like it, but has even quit at one time or another.

The “road of life” that we each travel isn't one endless stretch of flat, paved expressway, but rather, is filled with curves, crests, valleys, detours, potholes and bumps. It is its very unpredictability that makes it so interesting and alluring. We just have to see what's around the next curve. It's that same unpredictability that makes for some real gut-tightening questions and fears as well.

Having said that, I do feel that we, too often, give up on our dreams too easily and quickly – perhaps, just one small step short of success. So what do you do when the going gets tough and you feel like quitting? Here are ten strategies that you can employ when you hit those apparent “roadblocks” on your road of life:

    1. Remember the reason(s) you started in the first place. What was the “spark” that caused you to begin the journey? Revisiting that may help rekindle the flame that helps you go on.

    2. Ask yourself, “What would I rather be doing?” If nothing compelling comes to mind, then determine the next step you need to take to move you closer to your original destination. If something more compelling does come to mind, maybe you need to quit.

    3. List 10 reasons why you CAN keep going. What strengths and resources do you possess that will help you achieve your desired outcome? Just the very act of doing this shifts your focus from the problem to the solution.

    4. Give yourself permission to quit. Sounds crazy, but it works. When you set up an internal law that says, “I can't quit.” Or “I shouldn't quit”, it makes the desire to quit even stronger.

    5. Give yourself a need to continue. Rather than focus on why you feel you need to quit, focus on why you need to continue. What's the payoff, the reward waiting for you if you persevere?

    6. Stop focusing on the struggle and start focusing on the solution. Whatever you focus on expands. If your focus is on the struggle you are experiencing, that becomes the biggest (and maybe even the ONLY) thing on your “horizon” It blocks out many, if not all, of the creative opportunities and solutions that may be trying to present themselves to you.

    7. Take a hard look at your methodology. Tired of getting poor or less than optimum results from your efforts? Then why keep doing things the same way an expecting something different to happen? That's the classic definition of insanity! Ask yourself, “What's the most radical or unorthodox action I could take right now?” Try it.

    8. Make a contract with yourself. Write out what you intend to accomplish and how you intend to accomplish it and then give yourself, say, six months to achieve your goal. Sign and date it and keep it where you can see it. You might even impose some kind of “penalty” for breaking the contract – no chocolate for a month, maybe.

    9. Get real. Were you enticed by the “illusion” that success is easy? Maybe you were enamored by the “fluff” that if you just want something badly enough, it will find its way to your doorstep. Success is WORK. Pure and simple. It is the result of a certain mindset as well as a set of deliberate actions. If you want to quit something, then quit fooling yourself by thinking it's going to be a “piece of cake”.

    10. Walk away. Sometimes looking at something too hard or long obscures the solutions. It's the “can't see the forest for the trees” phenomenon. By simply walking away or taking a break from the struggle to solve, you often free your mind to see new options and opportunities.

Hot Tip

Hibernate - XP

Did you know that you can put your computer into Hibernate mode rather than shutting right down in XP?

To do this, hold down the Shift key while the Turn Off Computer dialogue box is visible and the Standby becomes Hibernate. Now the next question is 'why would you do this'? When your computer is in hibernation, everything that is in the memory is saved so the next time you power up - everything that was open when you went into Hibernate will be restored to your Desktop.
