Hi everyone and welcome to today's issue of KIT. Welcome to
our new subscribers. We're happy to have you join us. Be sure

Today is a very full issue so I'm going to keep my comments
brief.

Today's Feature Articles start with Domain Name Slamming by
Richard Lowe and is one that should be paid attention to. I
was just discussing domain name renewal last week with some
business associates and it was suggested you should renew your
domain name no less than ten days prior to expiry. And always
be certain they have an up to date e-mail address should they
need to contact you. The details you receive when you register
your domain is very important. Keep it in a safe place and
always print out a copy or two.

Our second Feature is called Write For Publicity, written by
Shelley Lowery. This is a terrific article for those of you
new to the idea of writing an article. It outlines the standard
and acceptable guidelines for writing your articles as well as
where you can place them for greater exposure.

If you want your articles published, please follow the 
guidelines set out by publishers. Most, if not all of them, do
not have time to reformat your article so it will get passed
by no matter how well-written.

Domain Name Slamming

Today I received a notice in the mail claiming that my domain 
name was about to expire. The letter was written in extremely 
alarming terms, as if my entire world would be destroyed forever 
if I was stupid enough to allow the name to expire. The letter 
made it clear that I could renew immediately and should, because 
if the domain expired I would, of course, lose it and thus life 
as I knew it would come to a close.

Closer examination revealed that the document was not from my 
domain registrar at all. In fact, it was from some company that 
I had never heard of before. The letter certainly looked 
official and important, but in reality it was just more junk 
mail.

Okay, first question: how had these idiots gotten my home 
address? Simple. As it turns out, this is a common practice 
among some of the less ethical domain registrars. Using the 
WHOIS database, they get a list of all of the domain names about 
to expire, then send a letter to each address explaining this 
fact and offering to renew the domain.

The WHOIS database is a list of each domain name that exists on 
the internet, along with the name and address (and some other 
information) of each owner. This information is public 
knowledge, freely available to anyone.

What would have happened if I had sent a check to the domain 
registrar to pay for a renewal? It would have been transferred 
to the new registrar. If I had not read the letter carefully, I 
probably would not have realized that I was not just renewing my 
domain, I was transferring my domain to a new registrar.

In some instances worse things happen. You could receive an 
email in your inbox, for example, making the same claim: your 
domain is about to expire. Click on a link and you've given 
(unknowingly) permission for your domain to be transferred. A 
few days later you might discover your web site not working, 
your email turned off and your domain information completely 
unavailable.

This is called "domain name slamming", and it is named after the 
practice that some highly unethical long distance phone 
companies employ. These companies will, at the least 
provocation, change your phone company to themselves. You could 
cash a check, return a post card or use any number of other 
means to "give permission" to change. Some of the most 
unethical companies have been known to just change your service 
without even asking.

The moral of the story? Keep good records of where your domain 
names are registered. If you do get an email or a letter, go 
directly to your domain registrar's web site and renew the 
domain yourself. Don't click anything in the email, respond or 
send back a letter. Just go to the web site and renew. This way 
you can be sure you understand exactly what is happening, and 
this way you can be positive that nothing else is occurring.

And oh yes, stay away from those registrars who engage in this 
practice. At least, that's my humble advice. I find the whole 
tactic unethical in the extreme, and personally, I will go to 
extremes to not do business with any registrar who slams.

Write for Publicity

If you're looking for a powerful way to get free publicity
and build your credibility at the same time, then writing
articles may be your answer.

If you've been on the Internet for a while, you've probably
subscribed to a few ezines. Many ezine publishers will 
include an article written by a guest author. At the end
of the article is a few lines of text about the author 
referred to as bylines or resource box. These lines of text 
are basically just an advertisement for the writer. They 
usually contain a couple of lines about the author and a 
web address.

The writer gives the publisher permission to publish their 
article, free of charge, in exchange for the publisher 
including the author's bylines. 

By writing articles and allowing them to be freely 
published, your articles will have the potential to be 
viewed by millions of Internet users. They may be 
published by several ezines with subscriber bases of a 
few hundred to several thousand. In addition, they may 
be displayed in ezine archives or on high traffic websites. 

Most ezine publishers prefer short articles between 500 
and 750 words. Short "tip" articles of just a couple of 
paragraphs are also very popular. Articles should be 
formatted to 65 characters per line or less, including 
spaces, and written in short paragraph sections. 

When you begin writing your article, avoid using your 
standard word processing programs, as they do not allow 
for proper formatting. Instead, use a text editor such 
as NotePad. It should already be installed on your desktop. 

When you begin typing your article, use a hard carriage 
return (hit enter) when your text reaches 65 characters,
including spaces, and leave a space between your 
paragraphs. This will enable publishers to easily copy and 
paste your article into their publication. By taking the 
time to properly format your article, you will increase your
chance of being published significantly. 

Most publishers receive many article submissions each 
week and only select a few to be published. Here are 
some basic guidelines to assist you in getting published:

(1) Make sure you follow the publishers' submission 
guidelines. Articles submitted to publishers that don't 
follow the submission guidelines will most likely be deleted.

(2) Make sure your article is properly formatted.
Publishers won't take the time to format your article. 
They'll simply delete it and move on to the next article 
submission.

(3) Keep your bylines down to 6 lines or less.
Publishers will not publish articles that contain excessively
long bylines.

(4) Select a descriptive title to intrigue your readers.
Use a powerful headline that demands attention and try to
keep it all on one line.

(5) Use proper grammar and spelling.
Publishers will not take the time to edit your article. Make
sure you read your article several times and use spellcheck.

(6) Avoid articles that are nothing more than a sales letter.
Publishers want quality content and will simply delete an 
article that is written like a sales letter. 

(7) Avoid referring readers to an affiliate URL.
Articles containing affiliate links may make your article 
appear to be biased and untrustworthy. 

(8) Write your articles with a sincere desire to teach and 
inform. Talk to your readers and share your expertise.

Once you've written your article, you'll need to develop a 
list of publishers that may be interested in publishing it. 
The best way to accomplish this is to display your articles 
on your website. Place a subscription box on each of your 
article pages to enable your visitors to subscribe. This list 
should be used to announce your new articles. 

In addition, you can visit some ezine sites to locate 
publishers who may be interested in your articles. A good 
place to start is eZINESearch.

Search through the database for publications that may 
be interested in the type of article you've written. 

Another great way to promote your articles is to submit 
them to article announcement groups. These groups 
enable writers to submit their articles to an entire group 
of publishers, completely free.
