KIT # 92: How To Make Your Website User Friendly
Issue:   #92    Date: April 8th, 2003

Publisher's Corner

Hi and welcome to today's issue of Keeping in Touch. A big, warm 'hello' to all our new subscribers.

How's Spring behaving in your neighborhood? Imagine my shock waking up to 8 inches of snow on Friday morning! This was mild compared to other cities but surprising none the less. It seems to me that April 'showers' bring May flowers -- not snow. We are supposed to be seeing plus temperatures starting today.

How To Make Your Website User Friendly is today's Feature Article. Ken Hill offers really good tips to help you determine the most important things to focus on when building your site. Keep these ideas in mind if you are in the process of re-writing or updating your site as well.

As you know, many publishers have been experiencing several serious setbacks in getting their ezines to the people who have asked for it. The so-called solutions presented by Habeas and like-minded companies are definitely not the answer. I have an idea or two up my sleeve and as soon as I can, I'll let you know about them. In the meantime, like everyone else, it's time to get the tax stuff to the accountant.

There are many methods being offered as 'the only way' to set your goals and implement them. One of these methods is called affirmations. Today's Special is Affirmations - Do They Work? written by jl scott.

A final note - it's that time of year where our local producer, Peak Market reaches out for help. All you need to do is sign up for the Peak Market receipes. And they are good. For each new sign-up, they donate 50 pounds of fresh produce for families that need it. Last year the Winnipeg Harvest Food Bank received 758,000 pounds of food from this campaign. It doesn't cost you a cent.

This year they have a goal of 'one million pounds' to be given to the food bank. This would help a lot of people. If you would like to receive the recipes and help people receive food by doing so, please sign up for your recipes here:

And thank you for accepting a very worthy cause.

Have a great day and keep on smiling.

How To Make Your Website User Friendly
by Ken Hill

The following tips will help you build a user friendly website that generates more profit for your business:

1. Build your site to be fast loading. Eliminate the use of large slow loading graphics, banners, or anything else that would make your site not load quickly.

Keep in mind that most internet users will not stay on a site that takes more than 15 or 20 seconds to load.

Limit your use of graphics to only those that add to your site's theme or that grab and focus your visitors' attention on your ad copy or promotional material.

2. Don't ask your visitors to download anything in order to properly view or use your site.

3. Keep your site accessible to the majority of internet users including visitors with different browsers.

4. Rid your site of dead links. Continue to regularly check your links to make sure they are all still working properly.

5. Keep your site easy on the eye. Eliminate the use of endlessly scrolling pages, blinking or moving animation, and be careful when choosing which color scheme to use for your site.

6. Keep your design and color scheme consistent throughout your site.

7. Don't open all of your pages in a new window. Use this option only when linking to other people's sites within your site's content to make it easy for your visitors to continue to use your site.

8. Make your site easy to navigate. Your visitors should be able to know, as well as you do, how to get to everything on your site.

Include a site map, a link back home on each of your pages, make your visited links and not visited links color different, and if your site is large enough also include a search function.

9. If you constantly update your site with new content, make it easy for your visitors to find the latest changes to your site by providing them with a "What's New Section."

10. You can also make it easier for your visitors to find what's new on your site by asking them to subscribe to be notified by email when you've added new content to your site.

11. Give quality support to your visitors by adding a "Frequently Asked Questions" page to your site, providing your email and contact information on every page of your site so that your visitors can easily get in touch with you, and by answering all your visitors' inquiries in a timely and courteous manner.

Inspiration

I'm not happy, I'm cheerful. There's a difference. A happy woman has no cares at all. A cheerful woman has cares, but has learned how to deal with them.
- Beverly Sills, Opera Singer

It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not.
- James Gordon, M.D

Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.

Special Feature

"Affirmations - Do They Work?"
by jl scott, ph.d.

Well, yes - and no. Depends on how you do it.

Vast numbers of people have been taught to use affirmations by repeating a positive statement over - and over - and over. The idea is to convince your unconscious mind of the truth of the statement. You can certainly learn your multiplication tables that way but rarely will you will bring what you want into your life.

Words do not create. Feelings create!

When you repeat a statement over and over - it becomes hypnotic. Ever been to a Catholic wake where the Rosary was said? Only the most devout can repeat those prayers that many times without thinking about something else while they do it. Devotion is a feeling. Feeling - or emotion - will hold your attention.

Yet, you must bring your attention to the things you wish to create for your life. Here are a couple of better ways to affirm what you want. They take a bit more time than just parroting words but they are astoundingly effective.

First - write it down. Write it down every day. Write all the details. Write what your life will be like when you receive your intended situation. Write all the good feelings you expect to experience when you have manifested your desire. Invoke lots of feeling in your writing.

Next - take at least 10 minutes every day to visualize your desire. Find some quiet time in a quiet place. Relax - close your eyes. Hear the silence of the universe waiting to receive your instructions. Then, picture it! Again - in detail. Use all of your senses. See it - hear it - smell it - touch it - even taste it in your visualization. But, most of all - feel it. Feel the excitement - feel the joy - of having exactly what you want.

BOTTOM LINE:

Use affirmation in concrete ways. Put it on paper. Then see it - and experience it - in your mind. Remember - your unconscious mind accepts what it "sees" as real and already existing.
